Roundtable discussion in Bangkok

On 26–27 March 2015, the WMD project of International Law and Policy Institute (ILPI) organised its ninth regional roundtable meeting on nuclear weapons in Bangkok, Thailand

The meeting was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand (TMFA) and brought together more than 30 participants mainly from the Asia-Pacific region, including government officials (from 13 different states), academics and civil society actors. The main objective was to share thoughts and ideas on how the humanitarian initiative on nuclear weapons can be taken forward, and specifically on how to close the ‘legal gap’ identified at the Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons.

Linkages between international development frameworks and nuclear weapons

Development and disarmament are inextricably linked. In this background paper, Melissa Sabatier discusses the effect of a nuclear detonation on international development efforts, and the way in which international development frameworks incorporate ideas about disarmament. The article ends with a discussion of how disarmament could be fitted into the post-2015 development agenda.

ILPI roundtable discussion in Tagaytay, June 2014

On 3–4 June 2014, ILPI’s Nuclear Weapons Project organized its 7th regional roundtable meeting near Manila, the Philippines, in collaboration with the Center for Peace Education (CPE) at Miriam College and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). A total of 17 individuals attended the conference, from eight countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Six of the participants were government officials, the rest from civil society and academia. The topic of discussion was the role of the Asia–Pacific region in the humanitarian initiative on nuclear weapons, and the road ahead in the field of nuclear disarmament. The meeting stretched from lunch to lunch, and was held at the Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay, near Manila.
